This guide will walk you through all the steps, materials, and techniques needed to craft your own watch strap from start to finish.

Step 1: Measure the Watch Strap

  • Lug Width: Measure the distance between the two lugs (the small parts where the strap attaches to the watch)
  • Length of Strap: The watch strap has two parts, a short end, and a long end
  • Buckle Size: Measure the buckle’s size, which connects the two parts of the strap

Step 2: Cut the Material

  • Layer: The top layer will be the material (Exotic Leather, Regular Leather, Non-Leather Material), the second layer will be the reinforcement layer which is used for reinforcing the top layer to prevent any cracks, and the last layer is the lining leather using for help ensure that the strap feels comfortable on the wrist
  • Cut Shapes: Cut the material into two rectangular shapes for the short end and long end of the strap.

Step 3: Glue the Layers

  • Glue It Together: Carefully glue all three layers together

Step 4: Roll and Hammer

  • Flat the strap: Roll the strap and use a hammer to flatten it gently.

Step 5: Hemming

  • Hemming: Finish the edges by folding them neatly and securing them to create a lug hole

Step 6: Leather Skiving

  • Reduce thickness: Leather skiving in watch strap making involves thinning or reducing the thickness of leather, typically at the edges or specific areas, to achieve a refined look

Step 7: Shape the Strap

  • Cut the ends: Cut the ends of the strap into your desired shapes for the short and long parts

Step 8: Punch Sewing Holes

  • Punch Holes: Make small holes where you will sew the strap together.

Step 9: Stitch the Strap

  • Sew It Up: Use a needle and thread to sew the strap together through the punched holes.

Step 10: Create Edge Crease

Creasing the edge: Crease around the watch strap to enhance the overall aesthetic, making the strap appear more refined and professional. Furthermore, not only does it prevent fraying or damage, but also contributes to the longevity of the material.

  • Edge Painting: Paint the edges for a smooth look. Do this step thrice.
  • Edge Sanding: Sand the edges to make them feel nice and smooth.

Step 12: Add Keepers

  • Make Keepers: Create a permanent keeper attached to the strap, with an additional one for preference use.

Step 13: Install The Spring Bar

  • Insert Spring: The bar compresses when installing, allowing it to be placed between the lugs, then expands, locking into the lug holes

  • Make Pin Holes: Punch holes for the pins that will secure the buckle.
