Earlier this year, Studio Underd0g, the indie watch industry, created a bit of a controversy with the pricing of their timepieces. First, many were offended by their partnership with Moser, which caused their watch to be priced excessively. However, the release of the Third-Generation 01Series, which came with a mono-pusher Sellita SW510 and cost an eye-watering €1,800, was later and possibly even worse. It was an unusual price for Studio Underd0g, but a very reasonable price for the movement, however many watch supporters were irritated by that.

The early 01Series watches, loved by many, were driven by the affordable, iconic Seagull ST-19 chronograph movement, based on the Venus 175. However, Seagull’s recent business model shift, raising their minimum order quantity to 10,000 units, posed a challenge for small brands like Studio Underd0g. This change made it seem like Studio Underd0g was trying to replace Seagull with a more premium option. Fortunately, they have secured an exclusive deal with Seagull for a custom version of the ST-19 called the ST-1901B, which will be featured in the upcoming Third-Generation 01Series. This move reinforces Studio Underd0g to offer mechanical chronographs priced under $1,000 while addressing concerns stemming from their previous collaboration with Moser and the switch to Sellita-based movements in the Third-Generation 01Series.

Design and The Details of the Third-Generation 01Series

The updates in the Third-Generation 01Series are subtle yet appreciated. Rethinking the movement has allowed Studio Underd0g to reduce the case size slightly to 38.5mm wide and 12.9mm thick, down from 13.6mm in the previous version. They’ve also enlarged the crown for easier winding and increased the size of the sapphire case back to better showcase the new movement.

The ST-19 column-wheel chronograph movement has Swiss origins, dating back to 1961 when Venus sold its machinery and designs for the Venus 175 caliber to the Tianjin Watch Factory. They subsequently enhanced the original 17-jewel movement into the 19-jewel ST-19, making it a direct descendant of the Venus 175. This movement is recognized for being an affordable mechanical chronograph that delivers great value. Although it is sturdy and dependable, the varying regulation of the chronograph’s eccentric screws can occasionally impact its performance and lifespan.

The Third-Generation 01Series retains the original dimensions of 38.5mm in diameter and 44.5mm lug-to-lug length. Made from 316L stainless steel, these watches are water-resistant up to 50 meters and feature a double-domed sapphire crystal. The dial has subtle updates while keeping the recognizable “big eye” design with a bi-compax layout, including a larger sub-dial at 3 o’clock and the same grained texture.

Available in four color options—Watermel0n, Desert Sky, Go0fy Panda, and Mint Ch0c Chip—each watch comes with a matching Saffiano leather strap and a tang buckle.
