Ressence Type 8 Indigo, A Watch Crafted With A Remarkable Handmade Indigo-Dyed Technique

The Ressence Type 8 Indigo is being introduced as part of Shellman. Shellman is a well-known Japanese watch retailer with a unique character. Shellman has also initiated the Indigo Project, which brings together watchmakers to honor the tradition of indigo dyeing, a practice that has been part of Japanese culture since the indigo plant was introduced through the Silk Route in the 6th century. Ressence is joining the project and contributing a special edition Type 8, one of their latest and simplest models, which stands out with its remarkable dial.

Indigo Dyeing Origin

Indigo as it means “the Indian” or “from India.” However, it is now known that indigo is also native to tropical regions in Africa and China.

More than 5,000 years ago, people in India, East Asia, and Egypt, along with possibly the Maya civilization, utilized the blue dye derived from the Indigofera Tinctoria plant to color their textiles. They must have truly appreciated the rich deep blue, nearly violet hue that this plant could produce, or else they wouldn’t have undertaken the labor-intensive process required to create it.

Design and Details of The Ressence Type 8 Indigo

Case

The Ressence Type 8 Indigo features a sleeker case compared to other Ressence models, but it’s still substantial. The Indigo version comes in a titanium pod-shaped case that measures 42.9mm wide and 11mm thick, and it is impressively lightweight at just 42 grams with the strap. Like many Ressence watches, it lacks a traditional crown and instead is adjusted and wound using a unique rotating caseback.

Dial

The entire dial rotates to point at the minute scale along the edge, with a sub-dial that rotates to indicate the hours. However, the standout feature is the base of the dial, crafted from indigo-dyed silk thread, creating a stunning pattern that is truly one of a kind. According to Ressence, making the dial takes up to two days, and Swiss artisans use 2.5 meters of indigo silk. The dial is specially carved to accommodate the thread, ensuring a flush fit beneath the domed sapphire crystal.

Power

Inside the Ressence Type 8 Indigo, you’ll find a customized automatic ETA 2892/2 base caliber combined with Ressence’s patented ROCS module, which allows the dial and subdials to rotate. The movement operates at 4Hz and has a power reserve of 36 hours. It comes with a grey Saffiano calfskin strap.

The new Ressence Type 8 Indigo is a limited edition, with only eight pieces available. It goes on sale today at the Shellman watch store in Tokyo. The price is CHF 25,500 before tax. You can find more information on the Ressence website.
