The MoonSwatch 1965 pays tribute to a historic moment in watchmaking. In 1965, NASA tested several watches to find one that could endure the extreme space conditions. Among the contenders—the Longines Wittnauer 235T, the Rolex Daytona Ref. 6238, and the Omega Speedmaster ST105.003—the Speedmaster passed the rigorous tests and was officially chosen for the space program. Since then, every Moonwatch has carried that distinction on its caseback.
The MoonSwatch 1965
This week, Swatch has been teasing something special on Instagram with retro-style videos ending in “1965.” Now we know why. To mark 60 years since the Speedmaster was qualified for space travel, Omega and Swatch are launching a commemorative MoonSwatch. The release also celebrates the moment Ed White wore a Speedmaster during his historic 20-minute spacewalk on Gemini IV.

The most striking feature of this new model is its white dial, reminiscent of the Snoopy MoonSwatch and the 2024 White Speedmaster, which gained attention when Daniel Craig wore it at an Omega event in New York. While some might feel there have been enough MoonSwatches, their impact on the watch world is undeniable, bringing new enthusiasts into the fold. When this edition goes on sale on March 1, 2025—exactly 60 years after the Speedmaster’s NASA qualification—expect long lines once again.

A closer look reveals vintage-inspired details, such as the classic Omega logo and wordmark extending onto the strap. This marks the first time Omega has incorporated these historical branding elements into a MoonSwatch. The case and strap are a light steel-grey, complementing the dial’s crisp look.

One of the most unique aspects of MoonSwatch 1965 is its chronograph layout. Instead of a traditional setup, the subdials are arranged to display “1965” across the face. The counter at 10 o’clock tracks 13 hours, the one at 2 o’clock counts 65 minutes, and the usual 60-second counter remains at 6. Swatch explains that the 65-minute counter operates unconventionally, resetting only after the 64th minute, with the 10 o’clock counter advancing by one hour and the 2 o’clock counter showing the 5th minute. While unusual, this feature adds an unexpected level of complexity to a quartz movement.

The finishing touch is the lume—when the lights go out, the numerals 19, 65, and 60 glow alongside the hands and markers, reinforcing the anniversary theme. While some anticipated a full vintage-inspired design, this mix of past and present brings an exciting twist to the MoonSwatch 1965. Click here for more information about the MoonSwatch 1965.
