The cherry blossom is one of Japan’s oldest symbols and has been used in artwork for thousands of years. The Seiko Astron GPS pays homage to its latest releases, the SSH171 and SSJ029.

Inspiration of The SSH171 and SSJ029

Cherry blossoms are closely linked to Japan, and for good reason. These delicate flowers contribute approximately $2.7 billion to the economy, attracting over 63 million people annually, including tourists and residents. The tradition of enjoying the blossoms is called hanami, which means to stroll and appreciate the beauty of nature’s transience.

Both watches draw inspiration from cherry blossoms but approach the theme differently. Rather than focusing on daytime spring strolls, Seiko has created two watches inspired by starlight, resulting in two unique pieces without the usual clichés.

Design and Details of The SSH171 and SSJ029

Like many well-designed Japanese products, these limited editions balance restraint and style. Both feature a deep purple dial paired with a black titanium case and large white indices. The black case and bracelet offer a sleek look, while the purple dial adds a touch of color, making these watches suitable for everyday wear.

The SSH171 and SSJ029 share similar black cases and dials inspired by cherry blossoms at night, but they are distinct watches. The SSH171 is the larger chronograph version, featuring a titanium case measuring 42mm wide, 12.4mm thick, and a 49.5mm lug-to-lug length. It includes a UTC scale and a dial that showcases a vertical gradient from almost black to purple. This model has three sub-dials at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, along with a small date aperture at 4:30. Inside is the 5X83 caliber, which features a 12-hour chronograph, perpetual calendar, world time for 38 cities, GPS signaling for time adjustments, daylight saving time adjustment, and solar power capability.
