Introducing A New Grand Seiko Icefall, The SBGH349

With each new release, they often use the same basic case shapes but feature dramatically different dials. The same goes with the new Grand Seiko, The SBGH349 features the same Icefall dial as the previous model, the SBGH347, which honored the original 9S mechanical series from 1998 and showcased a beautiful dial nicknamed “Icefall” for its resemblance to frozen waterfalls near their factory.

Design And Details of The SBGH349

Case

While they share a dial and case style, the two watches differ. The SBGH347 is made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, whereas the SBGH349 uses High-Intensity Titanium, which can be polished like grade 5 titanium but is twice as hard as standard titanium. This new material gives the watch a darker appearance. The dimensions also differ: the previous model was 37mm, while the new one measures 40mm wide and 13mm thick. Though it may seem large, the reasonable 46.1mm lug-to-lug length and lightweight titanium make it comfortable to wear. The design includes broad lugs, large polished bevels, and a polished bezel, all finished with Zaratsu polishing.

Dial

The dial, inspired by the texture and color of the frozen Nanataki waterfall near Mt. Iwate and the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, features a light shade of blue enhanced by an irregular vertical pattern. The applied markers are polished, and the sharp hands are faceted, with a framed date window at 3 o’clock that contains a white date disc.

Power

Inside the watch is the calibre 9S85, an automatic movement operating at 5Hz with a 55-hour power reserve. The accuracy is rated at +5/-3 seconds per day. The watch comes with a brushed and polished 3-link bracelet made from the same titanium and is secured with a folding clasp, though it lacks a micro-adjust feature.
