In 2024, CASIO celebrates a milestone—50 years in the watch industry. To mark this occasion, CASIO has launched several commemorative models, including DW-5000R, which revives the original G-SHOCK. Unlike previous limited-edition releases of the first model, this version aims to share the brand’s history and creative spirit with new and longtime enthusiasts. CASIO has carefully recreated the original design while capturing the essence of the 1980s, bringing these elements to life nearly 40 years later.

Production of the DW-5000R

While CASIO had a clear vision for production, the process of bringing this watch to market was complicated. The original model was developed in the 1980s using hand-drawn designs, contrasting sharply with today’s 3D digital methods. CASIO converted these original drawings into 3D data for prototype production; however, size discrepancies arose when compared to the originals. Acknowledging the challenges of producing precise molds in that era, CASIO realized that digital reproductions alone wouldn’t ensure an exact match to the original. They reversed the process by using the physical model as a main reference, allowing them to rethink the design for better accuracy.

Challenge

One of the main challenges of this reissue was adhering to the strict evaluation standards required for G-SHOCK models today, including criteria for shock and water resistance. While such standards existed when the first model was created, modern G-SHOCKs must pass over 100 tests for reliability. As a result, the DW-5000R needed to update its internal components and materials to meet these stricter standards, leading to a 0.7mm increase in case width, bringing it to 42.3mm. Rather than just enlarging the original design, each part was fine-tuned to fit the new dimensions, resulting in a nearly complete redesign.

Upgrade from the original

The DW-5000R incorporates the stainless steel center case from the original model and maintains the shock-resistant structure developed by G-SHOCK’s creator, Mr. Kikuo Ibe. This iconic hollow design suspends the module with minimal contact points, allowing for a slight buffer zone. While these features remain consistent with the original, the cushioning parts between the module and center case have been refined in both materials and positioning, with many subtle adjustments made to align with today’s standards.

CASIO’s commitment to reducing environmental impact is evident in this model. The updated backlight now uses an LED, improving visibility in low-light conditions and extending battery life from about two years to nearly five. To remain true to the original design, CASIO focused on the bezel. Since the DW-5000-1’s release in 2001, reissue models have showcased raised sections for the “PROTECTION” and “G-SHOCK” text, which enhances shock resistance. However, core fans have preferred the flat surface of the original. CASIO achieved this in the DW-5000R by slightly enlarging the case, maintaining the shock-resistant structure while capturing the classic look of the watch. This small change lends the model a softer, more vintage appearance compared to modern G-SHOCKs.

New Revival Models

Alongside the DW-5000R launch, CASIO announced the ICONIC STYLES lineup, featuring four models—DW-5600RL, DW-6900RL, GA-110RL, and GA-2100RL—highlighting the original’s color scheme. These models have a black base with familiar accents of red and yellow, continuing the brand’s legacy of shock resistance and commitment to innovation through generations.

The DW-5000R sticks closer to the original design than any previous reissue, offering 1980s nostalgia for dedicated fans. With updated materials and functionality that meet modern standards, it is best described as a “modern version of the original, encased in the exterior of the first model” instead of just another reissue. Notably, while it celebrates CASIO’s 50th anniversary, this model will be part of the regular lineup rather than a limited edition. G-SHOCK signifies a pivotal moment in CASIO’s watchmaking history and an important milestone in watchmaking, providing a perfect opportunity to appreciate its originality once again.
