Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph, It’s one of those rare releases that clearly wasn’t built to please everyone – instead, it embraces its own personality. This is a bold and distinct chronograph that feels more like something from the Neo-vintage era than today’s trend-driven market.
Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009
it wasn’t until the Tentagraph movement was introduced that the design truly came together. Earlier models used Spring Drive movements, but now with the Tentagraph, the Tokyo Lion has become a more cohesive and focused design, which centers the lion as the main idea throughout the watch.

It was surprising to learn the case wasn’t made of steel, considering how sharp and refined its surfaces looked. But it’s actually crafted from Brilliant Hard Titanium – the same material used in the Kodo model.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Grand Seiko without a special dial. This one is called “gold lion” because it’s meant to resemble a lion’s mane. The texture features alternating rows of brushed lines, giving the dial a sense of movement, like a mane in the wind.

The subdials remind you of a paw print, this shape helps make the subdials easier to read by reducing the gap between the hands and the markings. The hour and minute hands are shaped like claws and, along with the large hour markers, are polished and filled with lume for visibility.

Inside the watch is the Tentagraph Caliber 9SC5 – Grand Seiko’s first mechanical chronograph, released in 2023. This high-beat movement runs at 5 Hz and has a 72-hour power reserve. It uses a column-wheel and vertical clutch system, as well as twin barrels and a dual-impulse escapement to boost accuracy and efficiency.

The Tokyo Lion is 43mm wide and 15.6mm thick – not small by any means. But this size does come with benefits, like the impressive 200 meters of water resistance. The 50mm lug-to-lug measurement helps with wearability.

One thing that helps it wear comfortably is the curved case back, which lets the watch sit closer to the wrist and makes it feel a bit thinner than it is. The new rubber strap is another highlight – it’s 2.7 times stronger than Grand Seiko’s earlier silicone versions, yet still soft and comfortable to wear.

At $16,400, the Grand Seiko Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009 isn’t for someone just getting into chronographs. It’s made for collectors who want something a little different. You can find more about it at grand-seiko.com.
