Grand Seiko has crafted some truly remarkable dials over the years. Following the release of the stunning Icefall, Grand Seiko now introduces the Grand Seiko SBGJ283, a limited-edition regional model affectionately known as “Washi Paper.” Drawing inspiration from the traditional Japanese art of Washi paper-making, this timepiece continues the brand’s dedication to celebrating Japan’s rich artisanal heritage.

Washi Paper: A Symbol of Japanese Art and Tradition

Iwate Prefecture, home to the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, is where Japan’s traditional crafts have flourished for centuries. Among these is the “Art of Washi” — making washi paper. With over 800 years of history, this art form has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations, embodying the dedication of artisans committed to its legacy.

Dial

As with many Grand Seiko watches, the highlight here is the dial. While Grand Seiko often draws inspiration from nature, typically nature around one of their facilities, this model takes its cue from the Japanese traditional art of Washi paper-making. This type of paper is an important part of Japan’s cultural heritage, known for its textured, porous surface. The creamy off-white dial mimics the texture of Washi paper and features applied markers along with a 24-hour scale around the edge. A bright red hand is used to indicate the GMT function.

Inside the Grand Seiko SBGJ283 is the automatic 9386 caliber, which provides a 55-hour power reserve. The movement is highly precise, with an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The watch comes with two straps: a stainless steel bracelet and a brown crocodile leather strap.
