Casio has created a wide range of products, from musical instruments to well-known watches, and many of these items have become significant in popular culture and inspired CA-53WB. One example is the 1972 Casio Mini, which was the company’s first compact personal calculator and is a remarkable piece of design. Although this year is not a special anniversary for the Casio Mini, the new versions of the CA-53WB calculator watch feature colors inspired by the Mini.
From Calculators to Calculator Watches
Since the 1950s, Casio has been a key player in the personal calculator market. In 1957, they launched the Model 14-A, the first all-electric compact calculator, followed by the Casio 001 in 1965, which featured the world’s first memory function. However, it was in 1972 that Casio introduced the Casio Mini, the first compact personal calculator. Casio reports that the Mini sold one million units in just ten months, totaling six million during its initial production. This personal calculator was one-fourth the size of standard models, making it pocket-sized and easy to carry, fitting comfortably on a backpack or even strapped to your wrist.
When it comes to calculator watches, Casio was initially slow to embrace the trend. While other brands like Hamilton and Calcron released models in the early ’70s, the first Casio calculator watch, the C-80, didn’t debut until 1980. The C-80 evolved over time and eventually led to the CA-53 series in 1988, which is still in production today. This model gained fame for being worn by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future Part II,” which certainly adds to its appeal.
Design and The Details of the CA-53WB
Let’s look at some details about CA-53WB. It has a bio-resin case that weighs just 25g and measures 34.4mm wide, 8.2mm thick, and 43.2mm long, with a strap made from the same bio-resin. This variant introduces three new colors: black, ivory, and a striking blue-green.
The watch features a negative LCD screen with retro green text. The keypad font and grid lines are designed to mimic the original calculator’s style. There’s also a red mode indicator in the upper right corner as a nod to the Casio Mini. Its features include a calculator, stopwatch, secondary time zone, and alarm
The new Casio CA-53WB will be available in December at an appealing price of $36. Check out more on the Casio website.
