“The First Omega in Space” model was introduced in 2012 to commemorate the first Omega wristwatch worn in space and was discontinued by Omega in 2020. Now, it has returned with a few comparatively minor modifications that significantly impact it.
“First” Omega In Space
NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra wore the CK2998 (produced between 1959 and 1962) as part of his Sigma 7 mission. Three years before the Speedmaster became the first watch was ever approved to be in human space missions.
This “First Omega in Space” featured a black bezel and slimmer Alpha hands marking the beginning of the Speedmaster’s exploration into distinctive styling elements that would become defining features of the Omega collection. Compared to contemporary Speedmasters, its design was more straightforward, characterized by symmetrical cases and straight lugs. Yet, it remains a familiar and recognizable design.
Return of the First Omega in Space
This new “First Omega in Space” is a combination of the dial design with the 2012 “The First Omega in Space“, a grey-blue dial color palette of CK 2998 watches made in 1960, and the logo and markings as the original CK 2998.
The stainless-steel case of the new “First Omega in Space” is 39.7mm wide and 13.4mm thick, with a 48mm lug-to-lug distance and a 19mm lug width. It also has a water resistance of 50 meters. The watch features a Sapphire crystal that is designed to resemble a Hesalite crystal, along with a vintage-style Dot-Over-Ninety (DON) aluminum bezel insert. Inside is the Master Chronometer-certified caliber 3861, which is the same movement used in other current Speedmaster Professional models. This movement has a power reserve of 50 hours and a Co-Axial escapement. The watch also has a special case-back that features the engraving “The First Omega In Space” at the top and “October 3, 1962” at the bottom.
