Alien is now considered to be among the greatest science-fiction and horror movies ever produced. The 1976 piece of art “Necronom IV“ by Giger served as the inspiration for Xenomorph. A female form made of various insects, vertebrates, and even fossil components is depicted in the surrealist drawing.

The scripts for “Alien” by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett were inspired by older science-fiction films and stories, such as the 1936 science-fiction/horror classic “At the Mountains of Madness” by H.P. Lovecraft. Ancient creatures that resemble fossil animals hunt and kill a group of scientists in the novel. The actual finding of fossil in Antarctica by geologist William Thomas Gordon in 1920 appears to have served as the inspiration for this section of Lovecraft’s tale. An ancient group of sponge-like animals known as archaeocyathids are thought to be some of the earliest animals to have ever existed on Earth.
